LETTER | Treat every day as Earth Day

LETTER | It is Earth Day on April 22. It is a day to remember Mother Earth and how we treat her. It is not enough to dedicate one day in a year to remember her if we are to save her.
We must remember her every day, and put the environment and ecology at the centre of decision-making if we are to prevent future calamities that result in catastrophic economic impacts.
Once again, Earth Day is happening during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nations continue to juggle between containing the pandemic and managing their economic recovery. Sufficient concern for the environment and ecology is still lagging behind.

Linc Energy was partly responsible for one of Queensland s worst environmental disasters during an experimental coal seam gas project on the Western Downs at Hopeland 30km from Chinchilla between 2007 and 2013. Court documents reveal former Linc Energy founder Peter Bond filed for a stay (which means to stop certain requirements), of an Environmental Protection Order made against him. The Environmental Protection Act states an EPO is a legal tool issued by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, to a person or company to undertake specific actions within specific time frames to remedy a risk or prevent further harm.
No ifs or butts - fines enforced for littering in Rochdale Date published: 20 April 2021

Three more local residents have been fined in connection with littering and fly-tipping offences. One woman ended up being fined a total of £658 for discarding a cigarette butt.
The three were at Manchester & Salford Magistrates’ Court on Friday 9 April for offences contrary to the Environmental Protection Act (1990).
Chloe Lluch, 23, of Littleborough, had been witnessed throwing away a cigarette end on Yorkshire Street, Rochdale by a council town centre enforcement warden and had been offered a fixed penalty notice but failed to pay it.
The options include implementing demolition delays, creating historic and village districts and offering preservation incentives.
The Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to review the Historic Preservation Strategies Report when it meets virtually at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The issue was raised in 2018 when the town issued a controversial demolition for two homes on Haley Street in Mystic without the 90-day waiting period that had been informally used in the past. Two weeks ago the commission approved a plan to turn the empty lot where the homes once stood into a 14-space parking lot for the former Odd Fellows building on Cottrell Street to serve its commercial and residential tenants.
