ABS-CBN franchise issue best left to next Congress —House franchise panel chair

Alvarez made the remark amid new moves to reopen the deliberations on the ABS-CBN franchise renewal bid, and the assertion of Anakalusugan party-list Representative Mike Defensor for the House plenary to take up the unresolved measure granting the network a provisional franchise. Based on my understanding from the House leadership, the ABS-CBN franchise issue is best left to the next Congress, Alvarez said in a statement to reporters.

Secrecy over COVID-19 vaccine price contrary to public interest –IBP

Published January 26, 2021 11:54pm The government’s refusal to disclose the prices of the coronavirus vaccines that it secured from manufacturers is contrary to public interest, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) underscored Tuesday. Speaking on “The Mangahas Interviews,” IBP President Domingo Cayosa said the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines is “everybody’s concern.” “Any contract, whether private or government, ay hindi niya puwedeng baguhin o i-violate ang mga nasa batas o nasa Konstitusyon. It is the contract that must adjust to the Constitution and the laws,” he said. Vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. has repeatedly maintained that he cannot reveal the prices of the COVID-19 vaccines secured so far due to confidentiality disclosure agreements with manufacturers.

DILG lauds Senate for setting public hearings on economic amendments

CALOOCAN CITY, Jan. 26 (PIA)  The Senate’s first public hearing on the proposed lifting of the protectionist provisions of the Constitution on Wednesday, Jan. 27, is a big leap to make the 1987 Constitution responsive to the current needs of the country, according to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Constitutional Reform (IATF-CORE) headed by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).   The IATF-CORE lauded the Senate’s decision to tackle pending proposals to amend certain provisions in the 1987 Constitution as proposed by Senators Francis Tolentino, Ronald de la Rosa, and Richard Gordon.   “The start of public hearings in the Senate is an important step in revisiting the provisions of the Charter and make it more responsive to our current need which is to restart and boost the economy this year,” DILG Undersecretary and Spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said.
