The latest decisions by the ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) appear to show suspended Secretary-General Ace Magashule going down a one-way street from which there is no return – and it’s largely his own actions that have got him there.
On Tuesday ANC Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte delivered a statement on behalf of the NWC. In its statement, the NWC asked a “national presenter” (a sort of prosecutor for the party) to investigate the conduct of Magashule, Tony Yengeni and Carl Niehaus while they were supporting former president Jacob Zuma last week.
The NWC has also appointed a task team to head the ANC in the Free State. This is to be chaired by one of the first ANC members in that province to speak against Magashule, and his great nemesis, Mxolisi Dukwana.
Suspended ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule is fast running out of political options to maintain his influential position within the party after the ANC National Working Committee (NWC) announced on Tuesday it was looking at laying disciplinary charges against him for speaking outside the criminal trial of former president Jacob Zuma last week.
In a statement on Tuesday, the NWC said it, “condemned the unbecoming, divisive and defiant behaviour of comrades Secretary-General Magashule, Tony Yengeni and Carl Niehaus during the recent court appearance of former president Jacob Zuma”.
Magashule was suspended after he refused to follow the party’s step-aside rule and vacate his position after he was charged with corruption regarding a R255-million asbestos audit contract while he was Free State premier.

Johannesburg - The ANC has formally decided to oppose the partyâs suspended secretary-general, Ace Magashule s court bid to have his suspension overturned.
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe confirmed in a statement on Monday afternoon that ANC officials had met and had decided to oppose the application.
The party has assembled a formidable legal team that includes an attorney, three senior counsels - that includes top advocates Wim Trengrove and Fana Nalane - and one junior counsel. The ANC has appointed Ledwaba Mazwai Attorneys as instructing attorneys supported by the following three senior counsels and 1 junior counsel, respectively: advocate Wim Trengrove SC, advocate Ngwako Maenetje SC, advocate Fana Nalane SC and advocate Buhle Lekokotla, Mabe said in statement.
