Eid hasn t brought happiness for BNP in over a decade: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said their party leaders and activists have not been able to properly celebrate Eid in a decade as they have been subjected to killing, enforced disappearance and other repressive acts. Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated today (Friday) during a difficult time. On one hand, there s a dangerous outbreak of Covid-19 and on the other, there are serious repressive acts by the government, he said.
The BNP leader said, To be honest, we don t feel the joy of Eid. Because our leaders and activists have been killed and implicated in false cases. At least, 35 lakh leaders and activists have been made accused (in different cases). Eid never brings happiness to the families of those who are accused of false charges. That s the reality.
Reasoning unacceptable, lame Staff Correspondent Staff Correspondent
The BNP has termed unacceptable the government s reasoning on legal grounds for not accepting the application from BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia s family to allow her to go abroad for treatment. They [government] said they can t allow Khaleda Zia to go abroad [for treatment]. They have given some reasons which are absolutely unacceptable and lame. They said there is no precedence of sending convicts abroad. They are trying to mislead people, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday.
He made the remarks at a press conference at the BNP chairperson s political office in Gulshan in response to remarks made by several ministers regarding the application for sending Khaleda abroad.

Following her Covid-19 infection, Khaleda is now undergoing treatment at a better hospital, the BNP leader said.
He asked whether it is possible to take their leader to a hospital abroad for advanced treatment.
Her family members submitted an application to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and sought permission in this regard last night.
BNP hoped that the government will take measures for Khaleda s better treatment abroad on humanitarian grounds, Fakhrul said.
He also announced to hold prayers for Khaleda Zia s recovery next Friday.
Fakhrul informed that 425 BNP leaders and activists so far died of coronavirus across the country.
