A loan worth $231 million (£170m) has been approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the construction of a hydropower plant in India.
It will support the development of the Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Power plant, with a total capacity of 120MW, in Central Assam.
The project will double the hydropower generation capacity of the Assam Power Generation Corporation.
It is the third and largest tranche of the $300 million (£221m) Assam Power Sector Investment Programme approved by the ADB in 2014.

BANGKOK, THAILAND (13 January 2021) The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Thailand today announced a $2 million technical assistance grant to help promote the adoption of climate-smart agriculture in the highlands of northern Thailand.
The technical assistance, funded by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, will help local governments demonstrate to highland farmers climate-resilient practices and technologies for improving agricultural productivity, value addition, and food traceability, while tapping into local knowledge to enhance food security in a changing climate.
“Providing opportunities to raise incomes in the countryside will help reduce poverty and income inequality, and boost the resilience of highland communities and their ecosystems,” said ADB Principal Climate Change Specialist for Southeast Asia Srinivasan Ancha. “The grant will improve local governments’ technical and institutional capacities and help the

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a US$231 million loan for the construction of the Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Power (LKHEP) plant in Central Assam, India.
This loan is the third and largest tranche of the US$300 million Assam Power Sector Investment Programme approved by ADB in 2014. The project has so far upgraded the 70MW Lakwa gas project and improved distribution networks in the state.
The LKHEP plant will double the hydropower generation capacity of the Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGCL). It will harness water from the Kopili River to generate a total capacity of 120MW of electricity, particularly during peak demand periods.
ADB and the Government of India signed the loan agreement on Wednesday. This is the third tranche loan for the ongoing Assam Power Sector Investment Program, which was approved by the ADB board in July 2014. The programme, including its two previous tranches, focuses on enhancing capacity and efficiency of the energy generation and distribution systems in Assam to improve electricity service to end users. The proposed hydroelectric project is run-of-the-river project over Kopili river which will help increase electricity supplied from clean energy by 469 gigawatt-hour (GWh) by 2025 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.6 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, ADB said in a release.
