The Alabama Power Youth Leadership Conference went virtual for the first time Thursday, in a very big way.
More than 3,000 students in west and east Alabama watched the event via live stream from their classrooms and homes.
“We certainly miss seeing our students in person this year, but we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to host this program,” said Mark Crews, Alabama Power Western Division vice president. “By going virtual, we were able to have more students in west Alabama participate.”

Gregory H. Robinson, Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in the University of Georgia’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, wrote and published a scholarly tribute to Professor Jerry L. Atwood, who “inspired a generation of chemists to indulge their imaginations and to take risks in their pursuit of chemistry,” including Robinson:
The most consequential friendship of my life inauspiciously began on a cold, late-November evening in 1979, in Jacksonville, Alabama. Of course, I did not see it coming. I was studying chemistry at Jacksonville State University, slated to graduate with my B.S. in April 1980. Fort Payne High School senior Erica Hughes was recently named a semifinalist for the prestigious Cooke College Scholarship Program.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, on Jan. 25, 2021, announced the selection of 496 high school seniors semifinalists chosen from a pool of 5,860 applicants and represented 428 different high schools.
The highly selective scholarship provides exceptionally talented students who have financial needs with up to $40,000 annually for four years of college, enabling them to attend a top-performing college or university.
âItâs pretty surreal,â said Hughes. âIâve learned that the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship is a pretty prestigious scholarship, so I was surprised to get the call that I made it as a semifinalist.â
The following is a statement from OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche in regard to OVC membership transition: “Eastern Kentucky University informed us in writing, and Jacksonville State University has verbally informed us of their intention to leave the Ohio Valley Conference. By its very nature, conference membership is dynamic as institutional priorities and areas of focus change. We respect that evolution and value the fact both institutions will always be a valued part of our illustrious past. We wish them well and plan to follow our rules to ensure a smooth transition process.
“It is now time for the OVC to look forward. As we evaluate expansion opportunities, our ten outstanding members remain committed to one another and to the student-athletes we serve. We are a strong conference that will continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead.”
