Jacksonville State Approves the Renaming of Bibb Graves Hall

Alabama News Updated: The Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees today voted to rename the university’s historic Bibb Graves Hall during its quarterly meeting. The 90-year-old structure and campus administration building will now be known as Angle Hall (pronounced “Angel”) in honor of alumni and benefactors Marcus E. Angle Jr. (Marc) and his wife, Mary. “Events across the nation last summer compelled many of our students, student government leaders, alumni and employees to request that we consider renaming Bibb Graves Hall to reflect a more unified campus that believes in social justice and equality,” said President Don Killingsworth. “What the Board has approved today ushers in a new, more modern era for this important piece of the university’s history.”

Graves was a supporter of segregation, first elected governor in 1926 with the help of the Ku Klux Klan. AL.com reports that Jacksonville State announced Tuesday that Graves’ name would be removed from its administration building. The building will be renamed Angle Hall to honor alumni Marcus E. Angle Jr. and his wife Mary alumni who met at the university as undergraduates. Jacksonville State said the Angles made a private donation to the university to secure naming rights for the building.

Man killed after pointing gun at St Clair County deputy

From The Tribune staff reports CROPWELL, Ala. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly shooting involving a St. Clair County deputy. Kevin Darion Wells, 56, of Cropwell was killed on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened when a deputy was responding to a domestic altercation at 490 Pepper Road, in Cropwell. The deputy said when he encountered Wells, he noticed he had a handgun. “After yelling numerous times for the subject to drop the weapon, the subject raised and pointed his weapon at the deputy, Sheriff Billy Murray said in a press release. “The deputy then fired his weapon striking and killing the subject.”
