HAMMOND, La. – The nation s best offensive player resides in Hammond, America, as Southeastern Louisiana senior quarterback Cole Kelley was named the 2020-21 Stats Perform FCS Walter Payton Award winner in an announcement from Stats Perform on Saturday. Kelley becomes the 34th recipient of the Payton Award, bestowed upon the best offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision and named for the legendary Chicago Bears running back, who played collegiately at Jackson State. Kelley is the third Payton Award recipient from the Southland Conference, joining Stephen F. Austin s Jeremy Moses in 2010 and Sam Houston s Jeremiah Briscoe in 2016 and 17. Other notable past recipients of the Heisman of the FCS include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, Jimmy Garoppolo, Cooper Kupp and Trey Lance. The FCS Awards show will be televised nationally Saturday on Bally Sports (formerly Fox Sports). Check your local listings for availability
EWU QB Eric Barriere highlights AP FCS All-America team
Eastern Washington quarterback Eric Barriere, Sacred Heart running back Julius Chestnut and VMI receiver Jakob Herres highlight The Associated Press FCS All-America team. The two biggest awards in Division I football s second tier will be handed out Saturday. The Walter Payton Award goes to the player of the year and the Buck Buchanan Award honors the top defensive player in FCS. The AP s FCS first-team includes five of 16 Payton award finalists and 10 of the 18 Buchanan finalists.

Three VMI football players – junior wideout Jakob Herres, sophomore linebacker Stone Snyder and junior long snapper Robert Solderholm – were named to Stats Perform FCS All-America teams announced Monday afternoon.
Herres, named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year in both the coaches’ and media polls, led the Keydets in receiving during the season with 80 catches for 978 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 12.2 yards per grab and 122.2 yards per game, all of which led the Southern Conference.

Duquesne beats Sacred Heart in spring-season debut for both

PITTSBURGH (AP) Ohio transfer Joe Mischler threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score as Duquesne began its spring season with a 30-27 victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday.
Duquesne went ahead 27-12 with 1:03 left in the third on Mischler’s 12-yard pass to Garrett Owens. SHU’s Marquez McCray and Julius Chestnut connected on two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but the last came with 15 seconds remaining and the Dukes recovered the onside kick.
Mischler was 18-of-26 passing for 231 yards and he carried it eight times for 63 yards. Owens added 109 yards on the ground, and Bri Bruzdewicz kicked field goals of 20, 33 and 31 yards.
