A 74-year-old man critically injured in a weekend assault has died, and now a homicide investigation is underway. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the victim as Michael Ryan Berry. The wounded man was discovered in the 1200 block of Hanover Street in Tarrant. Tarrant police and fire medics were dispatched at 9:43 a.m. to the location on a report of an assault. They arrived on the scene to find Berry bleeding from the head.

Facebook Share Authorities have released the name of a woman who was killed when her vehicle slammed into a parked tractor-trailer on Interstate 59/20 Friday afternoon in Jefferson County. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the woman as Rita Faye Thomas. She was 37 and lived in Vance. Authorities said the 18-wheeler was stopped on the shoulder when Thomas’ Kia Soul left the roadway for unknown reasons and crashed into the truck. Almost a third of the vehicle was crushed under the truck’s trailer.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the victim as Zachery B. Brown Jr. He was 67. The shooting happened at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the 2800 block of 12th Avenue North in Bessemer. He was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham where he was pronounced dead at 4:18 p.m. Tuesday. Lt. Christian Clemons said the victim was in a car and had just left a convenience store when he was shot. A passerby called 911 after noticing Brown’s car roll into a ditch. No one is in custody.

(Contributed) Facebook Share Authorities have released the names of a woman and her adult son who were killed in the Monday-night fire at an apartment building on Birmingham’s Southside. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the victims as Sylvia Anderson Pate, 76, and Christopher Dwight Pate, 48. Sylvia Pate was from Gordo but was staying with her son. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded at 4:48 p.m. to Highland Manor apartments at 20th Street and Highland Avenue South. When they arrived on the scene, they found fire on the second floor of the high-rise complex near Five Points South. The building is home to mostly elderly and disabled residents.
