At about 9:23 a.m. a driver and passenger were driving west on U.S. Highway 27 towards Tallahassee when they approached the County Road 259 intersection, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. As they approached the one-light intersection in the unincorporated town of Wauneekah, a second driver coming from the southern part of the intersection crossed the first set of lanes and tried turning into the westbound lanes.
