NEWARK, NJ The Newark Board of Education reorganization meeting on Tuesday was deemed “historic” by district officials. Dawn Haynes was appointed as president, she is the first Muslim woman who wears a hijab to lead a school board in New Jersey. In addition, Haynes and Asia Norton were re-elected to a board with their locally-elected colleagues as well after years of being under state control.

NEWARK, NJ After the Newark Board of Education appointed Vereliz Santana to a vacant seat on the board in January following the death of Octavio “Tave” Padilla, a local civil rights chapter questioned the terms of the candidate selection process.
Santana was approved by a 7-1 vote from the board at its Jan. 28 meeting, replacing Padilla, a two-term board member who suffered a stroke and died at University Hospital on Nov. 25 at age 57.
After the appointment, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Newark chapter issued a letter to district officials on Feb. 1, claiming the board did not publicly discuss the parameters of Santana’s appointment, whose nomination was announced shortly before the members voted.

NEWARK, NJ Newark School Board President Josephine Garcia issued an apology today after making an inadvertent remark that was picked up by her microphone during a virtual public board meeting Thursday evening.
The remark came as the board prepared to begin the public comment period of the meeting. Here comes the bull , Garcia can be heard saying.
Following the remark, the public comment period carried forward and was neither publicly addressed at the moment nor during the remainder of the meeting’s public session. Although the meeting pressed on, members of the public who heard the comment were left displeased.

Newark Public Schools announced Wednesday that students would continue with remote class until April 12 due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Students were scheduled to begin returning to in-person classes on Jan. 25. But the plan was opposed by Newark Teachers Union President John Abeigon, Chalkbeat first reported.
“We don’t want to play ping pong with the economy of our parents,” Abeigon told NJ Advance Media on Thursday, adding that it wouldn’t make sense to reopen schools just to close them again in a week. “Right now everyone is a groove. The parents are in a groove. The teachers and students are in a groove.”
