Dawn Haynes was appointed as president, she is the first Muslim woman who wears a hijab to lead a school board in New Jersey. Cagnassola February 8, 2021 at 4:37 PM NEWARK, NJ After the Newark Board of Education appointed Vereliz Santana to a vacant seat on the board in January following the death of Octavio “Tave” Padilla, a local civil rights chapter questioned the terms of the candidate selection process.  Santana was approved by a 7-1 vote from the board at its Jan. 28 meeting, replacing Padilla, a two-term board member who suffered a stroke and died at University Hospital on Nov. 25 at age 57.  After the appointment, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Newark chapter issued a letter to district officials on Feb. 1, claiming the board did not publicly discuss the parameters of Santana’s appointment, whose nomination was announced shortly before the members voted.

The remark came as the board prepared to begin the public comment period of the meeting. Here comes the bull , Garcia can be heard saying. Following the remark, the public comment period carried forward and was neither publicly addressed at the moment nor during the remainder of the meeting’s public session. Although the meeting pressed on, members of the public who heard the comment were left displeased.
