Newark Schools President says Board Complied with Law Regarding Vacant Seat Appointment Process

Cagnassola February 8, 2021 at 4:37 PM NEWARK, NJ After the Newark Board of Education appointed Vereliz Santana to a vacant seat on the board in January following the death of Octavio “Tave” Padilla, a local civil rights chapter questioned the terms of the candidate selection process.  Santana was approved by a 7-1 vote from the board at its Jan. 28 meeting, replacing Padilla, a two-term board member who suffered a stroke and died at University Hospital on Nov. 25 at age 57.  After the appointment, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Newark chapter issued a letter to district officials on Feb. 1, claiming the board did not publicly discuss the parameters of Santana’s appointment, whose nomination was announced shortly before the members voted.
