Elizabeth landlord Joseph Centanni, 73, of Mountainside, is now facing more than a dozen criminal charges, a DOJ lawsuit and three separate state lawsuits alleging he sexually abused and harassed his tenants.
Two tenants filed lawsuits in state court this week alleging an Elizabeth landlord, who is facing a host of criminal charges and a Department of Justice lawsuit, tried to use his position to illicit sexual favors in exchange for housing.
In their separate lawsuits, a man and a woman allege that Joseph Centanni, 73, of Mountainside, tried to use his position as a powerful landlord to exchange housing benefits if they performed sexual acts, though both say they refused Centanni’s advances.
Feds lawsuit against alleged predatory N.J. landlord halted as he faces a number of criminal charges

U.S. District Judge John Michael Vasquez granted a six-month stay in the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) lawsuit against Joseph Centanni, 73, of Mountainside, after he was arrested in March on charges of coercing more than a dozen of his tenants into sexual acts in exchange for financial relief.
Centanni’s attorneys sought the pause in the civil case after the Union County Prosecutor’s office arrested Centanni last month and seized “virtually all of his business records.”
“As of this time, we have yet to receive a return of the documents or even an inventory of what was seized during that search,” Joseph Hayden, one of his attorneys, wrote to the judge earlier this week.
