It was the worst of scenarios for the mother of three young children.
She was being evicted from her home and was on the verge of homelessness. She had lived in a shelter before with her children, and she didn’t want to go back.
The woman was crying and upset as she was explaining her dire situation in January 2018 to Joseph Centanni, a powerful landlord in Elizabeth who owns hundreds of rental units. She later recounted the alleged story to police.
Centanni, of Mountainside, told her he could help her out. He agreed to rent the woman an apartment but told her she would have to return a “favor” at a later date, she said.
