CPS defends keeping Aramark to clean schools despite history of problems

Counterclockwise: Chicago Public Schools General Counsel Joseph Moriarty, Interim Chief Operating Officer Lindy McGuire, Interim Chief Education Officer Maurice Swinney and Interim Chief Executive Officer José Torres attend the Chicago Board of Education’s first in-person meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic began at the Chicago Public Schools headquarters in the Loop, Wednesday morning, July 28, 2021. Pat Nabong/Sun-Times Chicago Public Schools officials defended their recommendation on Wednesday to keep Aramark’s custodial services, acknowledging the cleaning company’s history of problems with filthy schools but giving assurances that new ways of tracking cleaning complaints in-house will yield better results than in the past.

Aramark s new CPS deal could be more expensive than previous contracts

Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times file photo Chicago Public Schools’ renewed three-year relationship with Aramark could be more expensive than previous agreements, the district revealed Monday as it moved to ask its board to renege on promises to dump the custodial giant. The Chicago Sun-Times reported last week that district officials were planning to award Aramark a new contract to clean CPS’ 600-plus schools just one year after vowing to move on from the company whose record includes filthy schools and inspections cheating. Ahead of that story, CPS spokeswoman Emily Bolton denied that officials had decided on a vendor for custodial services. Another company, ABM Industries Inc., had been in the running as a finalist.

CPS is rehiring Aramark, a firm with a track record of failure at keeping schools clean

Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times file A new school year is just over a month away, and over 340,000 Chicago students a good number of them still too young to be vaccinated are slated to return to school buildings five days a week. Nearly 32,000 teachers and other school staff will return to those buildings, too, all amid a newly resurgent pandemic fueled by the more contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus. To keep the potentially deadly virus at bay, every one of the Chicago Public Schools’ 600-plus buildings had better be well-ventilated and impeccably clean. Editorials Immaculate schools should go without saying of course, pandemic or not. But we’re making special note of the issue following the news, reported by the Sun-Times’ Lauren FitzPatrick and Nader Issa, that CPS is poised to offer another contract to Aramark, the firm with a well-documented track record of failing when it comes to making sure schools are kept pristine.
