COVID-19 reopening: Waterloo Region enters into province s red control tier

  KITCHENER Waterloo Region re-entered the province s red control tier on Tuesday as the provincial stay-at-home order came to an end. The region s top doctor said during a media briefing on Friday morning that she had expected Waterloo Region to fall into the red control tier, which is the highest a region can be before entering the grey lockdown tier. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang noted at the time that the region s weekly incidence rate is above the red threshold of 40 cases per 100,000 residents. The region s rate is at about 58 per 100,000. Our trends are currently stable. Our rates are no longer continuing to decrease at this time, she said Friday.

The Ontario government has officially announced that 27 regions will be moving out of the shutdown and into specific zones of the province s updated colour-coded framework next week, meaning all but four regions will no longer be under the stay-at-home order.  In a news release published Friday afternoon, the province said the majority of the public health regions will be moving back to the framework on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 12:01 a.m. due to general improvement in trends of key indicators. The health and safety of Ontarians remains our number one priority. While we are cautiously and gradually transitioning some regions out of shutdown, with the risk of new variants this is not a reopening or a return to normal,  said Health Minister Christine Elliott in the release.
