WORCESTER U.S. Reps. James McGovern and Lori Trahan stood on the picket line in support of striking St. Vincent Hospital nurses Saturday.
McGovern and Trahan held the “Rally Against Replacement” on the 69th day of the nurses strike, which is entering its 10th consecutive week.
The rally was being held to register strong community opposition to the recent announcement by Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare that they were refusing to continue negotiations to address a patient safety crisis at the hospital and instead were posting positions to permanently replace the nurses to maintain the dangerous status quo, according to a press release by the Massachusetts Nurses Association.
Hospital to hire permanent replacements for striking nurses
May 13, 2021 GMT
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) A Massachusetts hospital where nurses have been on strike for more than two months has started the process of hiring permanent replacements.
The move was made after the union representing nurses at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester “made their intentions to continue the strike known by adding a number of non-negotiable items to its already unreasonable staffing proposal,” the hospital, owned by Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, said in a statement Wednesday.
The nurses represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association went on strike March 8 seeking improved nurse-to-patient staffing ratios, which they say is needed for patient safety. The hospital counters that staffing levels are within industry standards.
