Global SVOD Subs to Reach 1.5 Billion by 2026

The number of SVOD subscriptions for 138 countries is forecast to increase by 591 million between 2020 and 2026, reaching 1.495 million, according to Digital TV Research.
This reflects an increase of 65 percent. The peak year was 2020, when 201 million subscriptions were added. This year, the total will cross the 1 billion mark.
The U.S. will overtake China as the subscription leader in 2021. China and the U.S. together will account for nearly half (48 percent) of the global total by 2026, down from 59 percent in 2020. SVOD subscriptions in India will nearly triple between 2020 and 2026 to 155 million, representing 10 percent of the world’s total.

2021 is set to be the year when gross subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service sales will cross the 1 billion mark, and this number is set to grow by 591 million between 2020 and 2026 to reach 1.495 billion according to a study from Digital TV Research.
The Global SVOD Forecasts study tracked SVOD uptake in 138 countries and calculated growth in the 2020-2026 period to be 65%. The key trend in the report is just how many users subscribe to multiple SVOD services. Indeed, SVOD subscriptions growth was found to be considerably higher than that for SVOD subscribers. The average SVOD subscriber is set to will pay for 2.14 SVOD subscriptions by 2026, up from 1.74 in 2020 and 1.84 in 2021.

Even though the market is set to show continued steady losses in key arenas, the global pay-TV industry is, says a study from Digital TV Research, on track to add 15 million more subscribers between 2020 and 2026 to take the global total to 1.02 billion.
The Global Pay TV Subscriber Forecasts report looked at the state of pay-TV in 138 countries and found that fundamentally between 2020 and 2026, 92 countries will add pay-TV subscribers and 46 countries will lose them.
Beset by years of continued cord-cutting, the US is projected to be the biggest loser by 2026 down by 16 million subscribers. While China and India will together continue to provide just under half the world’s pay-TV subscribers, China is set to lose 10 million subscribers between 2020 and 2026 as OTT platforms are more appealing than traditional pay-TV. However, India if forecast to add 21 million pay-TV subscribers.

Global Pay TV to Add 15 Million Subs

India is among the 92 countries worldwide that will see gains in pay-TV subscribers over the next five years, while 46 countries will experience continued cord-cutting, according to Digital TV Research.
Between 2020 and 2026, the number of pay-TV customers worldwide will rise by 15 million to 1.02 billion. India is set to rise to 180.7 million customers. China will remain the largest market, but its base will shrink from 327.2 million to 317.5 million in 2026. The U.S. will fall from 79.5 million in 2020 (it was 104.8 million in 2010) to 63.9 million in 2026.
By platform, cable will continue to lead with 412 million, down from 458 million in 2020. IPTV will grow its base by 63 million to reach 378 million. Satellite TV will lose about 8 million customers, falling to 203 million. Pay DTT will add 6 million customers, largely in Africa, to reach 25 million.
