The Nevada Traveler: The Reno area s once-thriving mining camp: Poeville | Serving Carson City for over 150 years

The Reno area’s once-thriving mining camp: Poeville It’s been said that Poeville, one of the few mining camps to ever crop up in Washoe County, was named after a man who was a cousin of writer Edgar Allan Poe. While that’s probably appropriate for a place that is now a complete ghost, Poeville’s story isn’t particularly macabre and is far more typical of Nevada’s often short-lived mining camps. Records indicate that in the 1860s and ’70s, prospectors poked around Peavine Mountain, the big mound that stands northwest of the Truckee Meadows. Several small mining camps popped up on the mountain’s flanks, including one called Wingfield (which was located near where the Desert Research Institute and Truckee Meadows Community College are now located), and Poeville, which originally was known as Peavine and later as Podunk (or Poedunk), and Poe City.

Washoe health officer supports mandatory COVID vaccines for students

View Comments This story has been updated to include the authorization by the FDA to use the Pfizer vaccine in children 12 and older and to add additional information from UNR. Washoe County Health District Officer Kevin Dick supports requiring COVID-19 vaccines for K-12 students once the immunizations receive full approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  Dick said he was also in support of plans to require the vaccines of University of Nevada, Reno, and Truckee Meadows Community College students as soon as the fall semester.  The Nevada System of Higher Education announced last week it was drafting plans to make it mandatory once the drugs were approved for full use.

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series. North Shore Arts Alliance works on behalf of artists in Chautauqua County. The organization is home to artists representing painting, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, fiber arts, wood, and mixed media. Our signature event is the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Art Trail, though we help create and promote a variety of arts-related events. This year, the Hub Crawl will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 29 and 30. Here are some of the artists participating in the event: ¯ Dale Anderson I am a self-taught welder/artist who has been making garden art and whimsical sculptures from scrap metals for 20 years. I repurpose visually interesting metal shapes that would otherwise be destined for the smelter. The process involves cutting and welding scrap materials with no other manipulation. My work evolves from what kind of “junk” I’ll find next. My goal is to transform objects of little or no value into things that will make me,

COVID-19 vaccines could be required for UNR, TMCC students this fall

View Comments There may be a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students come the fall semester at the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College. The Nevada System of Higher Education, the governing body over the state s public colleges including UNR and TMCC, is currently drafting plans to require a COVID-19 vaccine to attend school.   The vaccine mandate would be contingent on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lifting the emergency use designation for the vaccines. Drug companies such as Pfizer are expected to ask the FDA as soon as this month for full approval of the COVID-19 vaccine, which could open up the ability of schools and employers to mandate the vaccine.
