One of the things Dr Rudolph Alleyne, Head of the Sports Academy at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, would like to see, is that institution becoming an official high-performance centre in the Caribbean.
Alleyne who has been part of the academy since 2013 also believes that a national training centre could be realised as well if the academy partners with the government, sporting federations and the Barbados Olympic Association.
“One of my goals, when I was at Temple University finishing off my first degree, was to find a way where we can assist our athletes here in Barbados. When I say assist, allowing them to sharpen their skills, and their ability to perform particularly at the highest level.

It is well-nigh impossible to write the history of the USA without finding a place of special prominence for a whole host of black West Indians who, from the days of the Independence struggle down to contemporary times, made critical contributions to the social, cultural and political development of that nation and to the extension of civil and human rights.

The menthol cigarette citizen’s petition recalls the lost political tradition of petition democracy, when not only could the complaints of any citizen get a hearing, but that hearing would occur publicly in Congress.
Menthol in cigarettes has long been a scourge of our nation, particularly in communities of color. Disproportionately marketed to those communities, menthol has addicted millions to cigarettes, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands. Black, Indigenous, Latino, and other minority groups have long pushed for its regulation, even its elimination, but their votes have been insufficient to move the federal government in the face of the tobacco lobby. Last week on April 29, however, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced steps to begin banning menthol from cigarettes. This move comes after a surprising source of inspiration and agenda-setting: a citizens’ petition.
