The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles sparked some frustration among lawmakers Tuesday when speaking about constituent data at the Senate Finance Committee.
In testifying, Whitney Brewster, director of the state DMV, received questions from lawmakers about a security breach with Vertafore last November that led to a change in practices at the agency.
KUT’s Andrew Weber initially reported how 22.7 million Texans had their drivers license information compromised as a result of the breach.
“We do not and did not have a contract for sharing data with Vertafore,” said Brewster. “Vertafore acquired a company called QuickQuotes, which was under contract with us where we provided information to that entity.”

Bellevue ISD - closed Friday
City View ISD - closed through Monday due to water leak
Crowell ISD - closed Friday

Investigators in northeast Texas are convinced that a vehicle recovered from Lake Tawakoni last week belonged to Carey Mae Parker, who went missing in 1991.
A private search and recovery group discovered the 1980 Buick Skylark on Feb. 4 near a causeway about five miles from Parker’s family home. There were no signs of human remains in or around the vehicle, members of the dive team said.
Searchers used a crane and briefly shut down the causeway during the process. The operation was first reported by the Hunt County Theft Reports news website.
Ericka Miller, a press secretary for the Texas Department of Public Safety, declined to say this week if DPS officers were following up in the area.

Constable Alan Rosen said several victims have been duped by thieves into purchasing stolen vehicles with fake vehicle identification numbers and titles. In 2020, Precinct 1 conducted over 125 investigations related to fake vehicle title scams. I can tell you that families work so hard for their money. A lot of families, and a lot of our Latino families, save up money to pay cash for their vehicles, only to be duped, and only to lose their entire amount of money that they bought this vehicle for, said Rosen.
