The five candidates are James Childs, Michael LePage, J. Dean Smith, Kevin Roestel, and Erik Voelker. After each goes through a 15-minute interview, the commissioners will decide which one gets to serve on the road commission. The interviews were originally going to take place on Dec. 9, but the commissioners’ meeting has been postponed twice.

(Tribune File Photo) BAD AXE The rescheduled Huron County Board of Commissioners meeting from earlier this month has been postponed again. Jodi Essenmacher, the executive assistant for the commissioners, said the meeting would likely be held Tuesday morning in a similar matter to earlier this year where the commissioners meet in the district courtroom of the county building and all the attendees would attend via the Zoom conferencing application. Essenmacher said she would have to get her Zoom account reactivated on Monday in order to make that happen, as she would have to send out the proper meeting invitations.

Huron County had 13 new confirmed cases and one new death, with the county’s total now at 1,208 cases and 34 deaths. Tuscola County saw 25 new confirmed cases and one new death, bringing its totals to 2,170 cases and 77 deaths. Sanilac County had 14 new confirmed cases and two new deaths, with its numbers now at 1,298 cases and 52 deaths. Across the state, there were 3,896 new confirmed cases and 187 new deaths, of which 155 of those were identified during a vital records review.

According to a story on the Michigan High School Athletic Association website which was posted Friday afternoon following an announcement by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services which allowed for the resumption of those activities, teams in those three sports who are still active in the postseason will be allowed to restart practice on Monday, Dec. 21.

(Tribune File Photo) PIGEON When Upper Thumb schools break for the holidays on Friday, Laker Schools Food Services Director Cinamon Marker will look forward to celebrating Christmas with her family. But she will also be thinking about the work she will have to do over the next couple of weeks. In a typical year, she and her staff would get a much-needed rest and recharge for the remainder of the academic year. But 2020 is no ordinary year. That’s why Marker and members of her staff who volunteer will continue to provide meals to any child under 18 or those under 26 who qualify as special needs, if families request them. And Marker knows many will as they struggle through the pandemic.
