The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) on Tuesday dismissed a report that Cosatu’s affiliates are divided over the federation’s decision to support the ANC ahead of the local government elections later this year.
Popcru was reacting to a story published by the
Sunday World on Monday claiming that Cosatu’s special central executive committee (CEC) meeting last week descended into bitter personal attacks over support for the ANC.
The tabloid reported that Nehawu and the Communications Workers Union (CWC) wanted other affiliates to dump the ANC at the polls.

Hold that call centre, please
COMMUNICATIONS Workers Union general secretary Clyde Elder fretted on Thursday about TSTT switching call-centre providers.
Mr Elder believes that TSTT should have brought these services back in house. But it s likely that the current scale of incoming calls, handled until recently by DirecOne – which employs 200 workers is impractical for the company now.
That doesn’t mean TSTT’s new approach is necessarily the right one.
Mr Elder and TSTT may not be keen to hear this, but it s not really sensible for the telecommunications company to be relying on call-centre services in 2021. Globally, the trend has been to switch to automated systems, chatbots and online live chat systems to resolve basic customer problems.

RTBF reports the strike affected public transport in multiple cities, and seven in 10 technology companies. The FGTB union reports the manufacturing industry in Wallonia was “practically at a stop.” Workers at Liberty Steel in Tilleur, Liège, picketed a plant which is threatened with closure, putting 761 jobs at risk.
The strike was called by the CSC and FGTB unions, with a combined membership of three million, who have complained that profitable sectors of industry could offer more than 0.4 percent. In the face of massive opposition in the working class to stagnating wages after working through a deadly pandemic, the Liberal Prime Minister Alexander De Croo floated the

TSTT should use trained staff for call services rather than outsource the operations to private companies, Communications Workers Union general secretary Clyde Elder said on Thursday. He was responding to reports that TSTT had not renewed the call services contract with DirecOne and hired another private contractor Call Serv to take over the operations.
Elder pointed out that the 200 workers contracted through DirecOne were not connected with the union, but said any news of any number of people losing their jobs should be a matter of worry for the entire country.
