Customs Agents Decry Collection of Samples by NAFDAC, SON Officials

Eromosele Abiodun The compliance team of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has said it will beam it’s searchlight on illegal collection of sample materials by officials of Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in 2021. The team Coordinator, Ibrahim Tanko, who stated this in a chat with newsmen in Lagos, said the development called for attention because of the quantity of sample materials collected by the officials without returning them to the owners. In the same vein, he reeled out some of the activities that the team would embark this year.

SON seeks policy to repatriate substandard goods

TODAY File Photo The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has urged the federal government to consider a policy aimed at returning substandard goods to countries of origin to boost consumers’ confidence and strengthen international trade. Mallam Farouk Salim, SON’s Director-General, said, at an enforcement exercise on Monday, the policy would address the preponderance of imported fake and substandard goods in the country. Salim noted that an arrangement to return goods with no economic value to countries notable for producing substandard goods was timely and critical. “One arrangement I would love to have is the ability to return substandard goods back to country of origin, while also paying back the importers of the products if they were wrongly deceived.

Court remands two suspects for alleged adulteration of engine oil -

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of two businessmen, Vanger Luper and Bright Ogbuagu, at the Correctional Centre in Ikoyi for allegedly adulterating Automobile Engine oil. They were alleged to have produced fake Total, Mobil, Forte Oil and MMASCO engine lubricants and placed forged labels on them to deceive unsuspecting buyers. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) arraigned them on five counts of dealing in substandard engine oil and fraudulently claiming they were genuine products. Prosecuting counsel, Adeleke Olofindare, said Luper, of 27 Bale Street, Onireke, Ojo, and Ogbuagu of 5 Okoye Street, Igbeniri, Ojo, conspired to commit the alleged offence on December 23, 2020, at the United Allied Spare Parts Dealers Association (UASPDA), Trade Fair Complex, on the Lagos Badagry Expressway.

SON destroys 2,000 substandard cooking gas cylinders

ENUGU – The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) destroyed more than 2,000 substandard cooking gas cylinders fabricated in Onitsha and its environs on Tuesday. Supervising the destruction in Enugu, Mr Obinna Manafa, the Director, Inspectorate and Compliance Directorate of SON, said that the agency seized the substandard cooking gas cylinders in 2018. Manafa said the unsafe cylinders were fabricated by roadside welders. “These roadside welders do not have the capacity and capability to produce standard gas cylinders and they do not even know what standard cylinders production is all about. “If you look at these fake cylinders, you would observe that they were just cutting metals, joining and welding them together.
