COVID-19 in Utah: Will my school district require or encourage masks?

The Utah Legislature passed a ban on school districts or the Board of Education requiring face masks in schools during a special session in May. Under the bill, schools and teachers can encourage mask-wearing, but they can t legally mandate it to attend or participate in in-person instruction, athletics or other extracurricular activities during the upcoming school year. Only counties can now implement mask mandates. Granite School District Granite School District officials say they are awaiting final guidance on COVID-19 protocols from local and state health departments before deciding on health guidelines. Regardless, we highly encourage mask-wearing in our schools in accordance with CDC guidance. Additionally, Granite continues to share information on vaccination opportunities, and we anticipate hosting additional vaccine clinics for our community throughout the remainder of the summer and fall, leaders said in a statement posted on the district s website.

Teacher makes first court appearance after alleged assault of students

A Providence middle school teacher charged after allegedly assaulting students made his initial appearance in 1st District Court on Monday. Scott D. Meeker, 50, was charged last month with second-degree child abuse and four counts of class-B assault. Meeker was set to appear before the court again on June 1, allowing prosecutors and defense counsel to prepare for a preliminary hearing in the matter. × Advertisement During the appearance, Judge Angela Fonnesbeck also granted a motion to amend Meeker’s pretrial release conditions. The order allows Meeker to attend family and religious functions including “end-of-year school activities” involving members of his own family provided he is “accompanied by a responsible adult.”

Cache County School District: Free meals will be served to children ages 18 and younger Monday through Friday from June 7 to July 16.  White Pine and Lewiston Elementary Schools from 11:30am-12:30pm Birch Creek, Cedar Ridge, Nibley, and Lincoln Elementary Schools from 11:15am-12:30pm Grand County School District: Breakfast and lunch will be offered for free to all children 18 and under at Helen M. Knight Elementary School.
