TSOS Discussion has Opinions from Residents to Business Owners
The Microsoft Teams meeting that occurred on Tuesday afternoon regarding the future of the Temporary Safe Outdoor Space tent facility just off Highway 93 South across from the Buckhouse Bridge was facilitated by Empower Montana.
CEO of the Missoula United Way, Susan Hay Patrick helped to open the discussion by dispelling some misconceptions about the purpose and timing of the TSOS.
“First, we never promised that the space would close by March 31,” said Hay Patrick. “The TSOS never had an established end date and it s been tied to the duration of the emergency declaration and the pandemic, so we never said it would be dismantled by March 31. We never said that the Reserve Street encampment would be cleared out and closed, with residents relocated to the TSOS.”

MISSOULA, Mont. - After keeping folks without housing warm throughout the winter months, the Poverello Center s Johnson Street shelter location is set to close May 1.Â
It opened in November as an emergency winter shelter in order to provide more space during the pandemic.Â
It can hold up to 150 people while the Poverello Center is only able to sleep 88 while maintaining social distancing.Â
After the shelter closes, where will people go to sleep?Â
Amy Allison Thompson, the executive director of the Poverello Center, said there isn t another place for these folks to go right now. Every single night the Poverello Center is full and with housing availability practically non-existent there s a big gap in the community.Â

Changing From ‘Temporary’ to ‘Transitional’ Safe Outdoor Space
The Temporary Safe Outdoor Space tent shelter on Highway 93 South just past the Buckhouse Bridge, is still operating under the auspices of the Hope Rescue Mission in Missoula.
At the outset, the TSOS was intended as a temporary solution for those who wanted to eventually transition into a more stable living environment in Missoula, with scheduled closure at the end of April. Hope Rescue Mission Executive Director Jim Hicks has details about funding the TSOS.
“Our funding is tied to the emergency edict regarding COVID,” said Hicks. “It looks like that could be lifted this summer at some point, and while there s some residual funds from that, we will have to reevaluate after that edict is lifted as to what our future looks like.”
