Delhi shuts down 400 government-run vaccination centres as stocks dry up for 18-44 age group

At a time when vaccines are necessary to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, people between 18-44 age groups in Delhi will not be administered vaccines at any government-run centres on Monday as the administration claimed no stock left for youth.
Since the first week of May, the Delhi
government had set up
vaccination centres for 18-44 age groups and around 400 centres were opened at government-run schools across the capital, but they are closed now. However, vaccination drives for 45 and above age groups which were already operational at hospitals and other healthcare centres though have been extended with the idea of walk-in vaccination at government-run schools.
Delhi recorded 1,550 new coronavirus cases today - lowest since March 30 - prompting Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to say that the second deadly wave of Covid is now under control. The good news however came with a warning.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said COVID cases had dipped significantly and the second wave had also waned but the Delhi government continued to make preparations to tackle an imminent third wave.

Requesting the Centre to import vaccines, Mr. Kejriwal said both Moderna and Pfizer had refused to sell vaccines directly to State governments. “Now the cases are reducing significantly. For the country, this is the second wave but for Delhi, this is the fourth wave. This time, in the last week of April, around 28,000 cases were recorded but now they have come down to 1,500. The infection rate had reached 36% in the last week of April, which is now 2.5%,” Mr. Kejriwal said.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday said
Pfizer and Moderna have refused to sell coronavirus vaccines directly to the national capital and have said that they will only talk to the Centre. In an online briefing, Sisodia said all the 400 vaccination sites for the 18-44 age group have been closed in Delhi after the vaccine stock was over, while the centres administering Covaxin to the 45+ age group, healthcare workers and frontline workers too have been shut due to unavailability of jabs. Stressing that vaccination is the need of the hour to protect people against the coronavirus, Sisodia said they have spoken to Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson for vaccines.
