Northern Edge 2021 will span from the Aleutians to Fairbanks to Juneau, in the air, and on the water in the Gulf of Alaska.
“We’re going to have 240 joint aircraft, so that’s aircraft from the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Army,” says Capt. Kitsana Dounglomchan. He’s a U.S. Air Force spokesman. “I mean, you’re talking everything from fighter jets to tankers to helicopters, to B1-B Lancer bombers. And it’s really the entire suite, as far as aircraft assets that are coming up and that’s from all of the services. From the Navy, we have six ships coming. And then we even have one oiler.”

Thousands of troops and the latest in American military hardware will soon descend on Alaska for war games between branches of the armed forces. “Northern Edge” is a bi-annual, large-scale exercise held in May. And planners are looking ahead at the next decade of maneuvers in Alaska’s skies and waters.

Australian MQ-9Bs to be equipped to SeaGuardian standard

The General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc’s (GA-ASI’s) MQ-9B unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been approved for sale to Australia and will be delivered in the SeaGuardian maritime configuration, according to the sale notification, which was posted on 23 April.
The Leonardo Seaspray maritime search and track AESA radar, one of the primary sensors that differentiates the SeaGuardian from the SkyGuardian, is housed in the aircraft’s centreline pod. (GA-ASI)
The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency’s (DSCA’s) approval of the sale included the Leonardo Seaspray 7500E V2 active electronically scanned array (AESA) over-water radar and Automatic Information System (AIS) for surface vessel identification that feature on the SeaGuardian. Australia had earlier been linked to a sale of the SkyGuardian variant of the MQ-9, which focussed on the overland mission.

MQ-9B Armed-Reconnaissance drone for Australia
The U.S. has approved a possible sale to Australia of Armed-Reconnaissance MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and related equipment for an estimated cost of $1.651 billion, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) Friday delivered certification notifying Congress of the proposed sale.
The Government of Australia has requested to buy up to 12 Weapons-Ready MQ-9B RPA ; 15 Raytheon Multi-Spectral Targeting Systems-D, EO/IR sensors; 16 Lynx AN/APY-8 Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) with Ground Moving Target Indicator; 15 RIOTM Communication Intelligence Systems; 36 Embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigations Systems (EGI) with Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Modules (SAASMs), a DSCA release said.
