Vermicompost comes to Lalbagh
After Cubbon Park, it is now the turn of
Lalbagh Botanical Garden to use the
vermicompost method to put waste to better use. The vermicompost would be used as manure for saplings planted at the
Lalbagh Botanical Garden.
“We have established the vermicompost unit. We procure cow dung from the National Dairy Research Unit in order to convert waste generated here into vermicompost. We can generate 50 tonnes of vermicompost in six months,’’ said Lalbagh Botanical Garden Deputy Director G
Kusuma.
Vermicomposting is a method of preparing
compost with the use of earthworms. It is one of the methods to recycle agricultural wastes and to produce compost.

Like most other popular events, following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the popular ‘Compost Santhe’ had been suspended. It is only recently that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) started holding these santhes to promote composting, terrace gardening and decentralised composting.
The new system of door-to-door waste collection is working wonders for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) it would seem. Not only has it helped segregate waste, the Palike been able to save Rs 37.76 crore per year in at least 91 wards.
