The Murfreesboro Planning Commission voted to recommend approval to rezone 116.7 acres of land along Veterans Parkway despite criticism from Blackman community residents at last Wednesdayâs public hearing.
Principal Planner Margaret Ann Green presented the City Administration Departmentâs request to rezone 101.7 acres from Park District (P) to Commercial Highway District (CH) and Gateway Overlay District 3 (GDO-3) and 15 acres to be zoned P and GDO-3.
The properties noted within the application are along Veterans Parkway, south of Burnt Knob Road, west of Blackman Road and north of Vaughn Road.
The city-owned property was zoned P in 2017 with the intention of adding a park on the west side of Murfreesboro, according to Green. The area was commonly referred to as the West Park site.

A large Planned Unit Development in East Brainerd will be getting larger. At the Monday meeting of the Planning Commission, Chris Anderson and Rocky Chambers representing Green Tech Homes received approval for a modification to the original PUD. Phase I is currently under construction, and Mr. Anderson said this is the most successful development that Green Tech has done. Of 93 houses in the original plan, 40 have been sold, he said. The amendment will permit Phase II that is adjacent to the original PUD, in the 8100 block of Hitchcock Road, adding 47-1/2 acres, and another 120 units for a total of 227 dwelling units when the development is complete.

Mill Creek Crossing gets approval. The City of Kannapolis Planning and Zoning Board approved a change from Planned Unit Development to Planned Unit Development Conditional Use, clearing the way for MPV Properties. The development will be called Mill Creek Crossing.
The property is 229.44 acres. Plans included in the rezoning show a mix of residential, retail and office/industrial.
Two major retail anchor stores are planned for middle of the property. The corner of N.C. 73 and Kannapolis Parkway shows a pharmacy. Several other clusters of retail development are shown around the anchors.
Four large buildings are planned for the property off N.C. 73 (across from the giant Amazon center). All are shown as 100,000 square feet or more. They are labeled medical office or flex industrial.
