Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean had been searching for months for a way to bring former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull into the NSW government tent.
Last year Kean, who is close to Turnbull and often seeks his policy advice on renewable energy, nominated him as NSWâs pick for a position on the board of the Australian Energy Market Operator, AEMO. Turnbullâs nomination, sent to federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor for approval, was unsurprisingly knocked back. There is no love lost between the pair.
NSW Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean said he âoverreachedâ with the Turnbull appointment.
âThe focus should not be on personality,â Kean said in a statement. âMalcolm Turnbull AC has contributed much to our country and I know will contribute more into the future.
âHowever, no personâs role on the board should distract from achieving results for the NSW people or from the governmentâs work in delivering jobs and opportunities for the people of NSW.â

Turnbullâs appointment had been several months in the making and Kean had sought the backing of some ministers, including Deputy Premier John Barilaro, before taking his plan to cabinet.
In the cabinet meeting, sources say Premier Gladys Berejiklian was enthusiastic, insisting Turnbull was highly qualified for the job, while Elliott pondered whether there were any potential conflicts of interest given Turnbullâs business interests.
