An Oregon advisory committee is considering a “disadvantage index” to fight “systemic racism” through the state’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution.
The committee met Thursday to discuss possible strategies in prioritizing at-risk communities for COVID-19 vaccines and recommended the usage of a “disadvantage index,” which contains more than a dozen measures such as occupation, income, education level, pre-existing conditions and vehicle ownership, the Associated Press reported.
The committee’s recommendation would be part of the state’s wider battle against “systemic racism” by prioritizing “black, indigenous and people of color” (BIPOC) for vaccinations, the committee said.
The designated risk criteria also include certain occupations, living conditions and other groups experiencing “health inequities,” the committee said.

The New York Young Republicans are planning a “Re-Occupy Wall Street” event in New York City after allegations that popular investment platforms are throttling trading of certain stocks to protect big hedge funds.
“We do not want this massive story to get brushed under the rug. We want to keep the spotlight and attention on what Wall Street is doing and what the Biden administration is allowing. This is corrupt and illegal, plain and simple. We need to keep up the pressure,” New York Young Republicans President Gavin Mario Wax told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The Jan. 31 event is expected to attract hundreds, despite cold weather conditions in New York City.

The New York Department of Health undercounted deaths from the coronavirus in the state’s nursing homes by as much as 50%, according to a report issued Thursday by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The finding, which was based on data from 62 nursing homes, appears to undercut New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s assurances during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic that New York’s nursing home fatality rates were among the lowest in the country.
Cuomo, a Democrat, often claimed in press conferences that New York had a 20% fatality rate at nursing homes, which he said was far lower than states such as Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

Multiple soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas were injured Thursday after ingesting antifreeze thinking it was alcohol, according to a U.S. Army press release Saturday.
The 11 injured Army soldiers from the First Armored Division consumed what was described as an “unknown substance during a field training exercise,” according to a Thursday press release. Two soldiers were in critical condition and all the soldiers involved in the incident are under medical observation.
Initial reports suggested the troops believed they drank alcohol, which Fort Bliss and the Army rules forbid in field training exercises, according to a First Armored Division and Fort Bliss Public Affairs Office press release Friday. Initial toxicology results suggest the soldiers had ethylene glycol poisoning.
