Cooking gas price rises by 29% in two months

The PUNCH had reported in December 23 that terminal operators and importers increased the price of 20 metric tonnes of LPG to N5.3m on December 22 from an average of N4.4m a month ago, with retailers refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at between N4,000 and N4,500. The price of the product increased further this month, as 20 MT was sold for as high as N5.5m on Tuesday, translating to an increase of 29.41 per cent since November 20, when it was sold for $4.25m.

According to the available statistics, total consumption of LPG in Nigeria was about 50,000 MT in 2007. Kyari said: “Nigeria is currently witnessing increased domestic gas demand in the industrial and power sectors, leading to increased production and reduced gas flaring. ”Nigeria has also witnessed increased household access to gas networks and LPG in the main cities. There are deliberate plans to expand that access to rural areas.”

This was disclosed in a statement by the Executive Secretary, PPPRA, Abdulkadir Saidu in Abuja. He said, Nigeria consumed 840,594.37 MT LPG in 2019, indicating an increase of 60.5% over 635,452.061MT recorded in 2018. This steady and sustained pattern of growth, according to him, culminated in the over 1million metric tonnes of LPG domestic consumption milestone in 2020 has placed the country 1st in West Africa and one of the leading LPG consuming nations on the continent.
