In Alle-Kiski Valley churches, coping with pandemic will be part of Easter sermon message

Alle-Kiski Valley churches will be filling its pews on Sunday after not being able to hold in-person Easter services last year. Many churches had to resort to online streaming to deliver sermons during the 2020 Easter holiday. This year, church members can be present for Sunday’s worship where many will hear sermons mentioning the pandemic. The Rev. Greg Spencer, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Brackenridge, will be delivering a sermon titled “Opening Day,” which will reference baseball and other opening day events that everyone can look forward to attending in-person soon.

Gainesville celebrates Easter with pandemic teachings in mind First Magnitude Brewing Company is usually a popular gathering spot for Gainesville residents to swap stories over a pint of beer, but on Easter Sunday it became a sanctuary for members of City Church to join one another nearby though still at a distance  to sing and worship in celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.  “It’s a beautiful morning, a bit cold,” said Mary Lebo, who attended service there early Sunday. She and several dozen others bundled up in jackets, hats and scarves to filter into the brewery’s beer garden, which has served as the makeshift home for City Church of Gainesville, normally on the second floor at 19 SW First St.

So are cautious, limited indoor worship services. At Central Community Christian Church in Montgomery, where they haven’t worshipped together in person since Feb. 23, 2020, the small congregation will meet in person on Easter morning at 10 a.m. “Yes, we are going to open up this Sunday,” said the Rev. Robert C. Belcher, senior pastor of Central Community Christian Church. “We’re getting ready to start back.”
