U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono was listening to the Senate debate Arizona’s objection to the Electoral College votes Wednesday when “suddenly all these staff people rushed into the chambers.”
The first person escorted away was Vice President Mike Pence.
“Then we were all ushered out, but all we were told was that the rioters had breached the perimeter and were in the Capitol,” said Hirono, one of Hawaii’s two Democratic senators.

ZAGREB, 8 January (Hina) – After Congress certified U.S. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ victory early on Thursday, Croatia’s Foreign and European Affairs Ministry congratulated them on the certification of the victory.
The Croatian ministry says on its Twitter account that it sends “congratulations to President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on finalizing the electoral victory in the Congress.”
“Croatia looks forward to future close cooperation with our strategic partner and NATO Ally.”
The U.S. Congress on Thursday officially certified Biden’s victory and the transition of power is scheduled for 20 January.
