Northlanders took part in a National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Wednesday. Northland leaders also declared May 5th Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women's Awareness Day in honor of the occassion.
Duluth Mayor Emily Larson addressed the media Thursday afternoon to offer recommendations for making the Spirit Mountain Recreational Area a more financially viable entity in the years ahead.
The press event, held at Spirit Mountain at 2 pm on Thursday afternoon, offered recommendations based on a report from the Spirit Mountain Task Force and consulting firm SE Group. The report explored how to bring better financial footing and improvements to the recreation area, which has amassed a sizable debt in recent years.
While Spirit Mountain did post a profit last year, despite the pandemic, the recreation area has received a series of loans from the City of Duluth as it has dealt with financial challenges in recent years. Those loans were actually one of the subject of Mayor Larson s recommendations in Thursday s presentation. “Yesterday, Carl (Crawford) and I listened to the verdict come in together. We sat, side by side, nervous in anticipation and then absolutely elated together by the outcome. We cheered. And then in silence, we watched the defendant be handcuffed and led out of the courtroom.
In the past year, we have all seen more viscerally the hurt and pain of what it is to move, live and breathe in this world as a black or brown person. That a truth of our history as a country, as a city, has been to relocate, exploit, enslave, endanger, hold down and murder people who are black, indigenous, and people of color. Sometimes with our knees. Other times with a noose. Consistently through our policies.

DULUTH, Minn. – Duluth Mayor Emily Larson held a virtual State of the City address Monday night acknowledging last year’s painful struggles through the pandemic and social justice issues surrounding George Floyd’s death while praising the city’s determination to come together peacefully with a focus on being a stronger, more equitable community.
“None of this will be easy. Last year tested us, and I hope we’ll never go through anything like it again. But I’m also confident as we emerge from this dark year. There is a brighter path forward,” Larson said.
Larson laid out three core principles for the year ahead: equity, sustainability and community.

DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – On Monday night, Duluth Mayor Emily Larson gave her State of the City address.
In her speech, she touched on the pandemic, policing, and the city budget.
She also reflected on the past year. Larson said dealing with the pandemic has been tough on most cities and Duluth is no exception.
Mayor Larson said the city not only got through the last year together but got through it “stronger and more resilient than ever.”
Now, she is looking ahead and shared some new initiatives planned for the coming year.
The first initiative is what Larson calls Community Policing 2.0. It aims at creating a more community-oriented policing approach in which everyone feels safe.
