Covid admissions fall at Whiston Hospital

The hospital was on course to surpass 300 Covid inpatients last week, reaching 294 before slowly falling to 284 by Friday. By Monday, that figure had dropped to 275 and has continued to fall all week, albeit slowly. A spokesman for St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has confirmed that as of today (Friday), Whiston Hospital has 242 patients being treated with Covid-19. There has also been a slight improvement in the number of patients needing intensive care, with 10 Covid patients in the hospital’s ICU department, down from 13 on Monday.

HEALTH chiefs have advised people to have a Covid-19 test if they are displaying certain symptoms – after cases of a new variant of the virus were found in St Helens and the region. Sue Forster, St Helens director of public health, issued a statement today explaining that there are other symptoms – additional to the three traditional symptoms – that people should look out for. The three main signs of Covid-19 are a high temperature, a persistent cough or a loss of smell or taste. But there are other symptoms that have been reported by people who have tested positive. Ms Forster said these are: a persistent headache, diarrhoea, fever and chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, sore throat, congestion or runny nose and nausea or vomiting.
