A recent decision by South Glengarry Council stirred some controversy last week. Council in a 3-1 vote decided to support a proposed campground on a strip of land bordering Cooper Marsh. The adopted motion amended a bylaw, changed zoning, and allowed for the project to proceed subject to some conditions, such as a site plan that respects setbacks and will be reviewed and approved by the township.

The decision is however, subject to a 30-day appeal period. Only Coun. Stephanie Jaworski voted against the motion to amend the bylaw.

“It’s so sad – the environment is completely a secondary interest to business interests,” Dr. Robin Poole said. “None of these reports, the so-called environmental impact studies, looked at (the wider) environmental impact, outside the little strip of land (in question. . . South Glengarry) councillors just accepted this.”
