Through the LSUE Academy, an early college dual enrollment program at Louisiana State University Eunice, students from three St. Landry high schools will start their next semester several steps ahead of their peers. Nicholas Vallair, 17, will start at Southern University in Baton Rouge in the fall, after he graduates from Northwest High next week, of course. He walked across the LSUE stage Friday to receive his Associate of General Studies. I took all my prerequisite classes, so I ll be almost a junior when I get there (Southern), Vallair said. I can focus strictly on my major.

Instead, like most kids who loved sports, Williams thought he would play forever and even make it in the NBA. That was a dream that was almost realized when he was drafted by the Phoenix Suns organization in 1981. But a knee injury put a stop to his athletic career that preseason and sent him down a path that would eventually lead to a 35-year career at his alma mater Pensacola High School, which included roles in teaching, coaching and administration. Williams plans to retire as principal at the end of this school year.
