PORTLAND – B. Rose Thompson passed away peacefully on Jan. 26, 2021 while under the loving care of the Birchwood at Canco staff with her family by her side. She was born in Portland, the only child of Robert H. Haskell and Irene E. (Stimpson) Haskell. Her grandmother and namesake, Beulah Haskell, was a long time resident of Portland.
Rose was a graduate of South Portland High School and attended both Gorham State Teachers College and University of Maine at Orono. She met the love of her life and future husband Paul A Thompson while both were attending college in the Portland area. Paul was attending and graduated from Southern Maine Technical Institute presently (Southern Maine Community College).

DAMARISCOTTA MILLS The Maine Association of Family Consumer Sciences (MAFCS) will celebrate National Family & Consumer Sciences Educator Day 2021 on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
This event showcases the value and importance of family and consumer sciences education and its educators. FCS education takes place throughout all 16 Maine counties in public and private grammar, middle and high schools, college, university and community settings across all generations.
MAFCS will thank FCS educators and supporters throughout the state, including those who teach FCS principles at public and private schools, through the UMaine Cooperative Extension, local businesses, community and youth organizations such as FARMS, 4-H, Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), as well as in grocery store and healthcare settings.

SOUTH PORTLAND In this year’s state of the schools presentation on Jan. 25, Superintendent Ken Kunin provided a snapshot of the district, including a rise in student homelessness and increased graduation rate from 2010.
In 2020, South Portland High School graduated 217 students with a four-year graduation rate of 91.5 percent, Kunin said.
“We’ve been averaging about 90 percent four-year graduation rate over the last five years, and that is up from a 79 percent four-year graduation rate in 2010,” he said. “From 2010 on, South Portland has done tremendous work to really increase the rate of graduation for our students and provide students opportunities for their future.”

SOUTH PORTLAND Kaelan Gildart and Jonathan DeRoche, two South Portland High School juniors and vocalists, will perform in the 2021 All-Eastern Honors Ensemble, premiering April 23.
The students will join high school musicians in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont for a virtual weekend in March, announced the National Association for Music Education Eastern Division.
“This year, students will individually record their performance from home, led by a virtual performance of their
conductor,” NAfME Eastern Division said in a release. “The recordings will be edited together to produce a virtual ensemble for the concert performance. The concert will be premiered on April 23rd at 8:30 p.m. during the designated concert hour at the 57th NAfME Eastern Divisi
