Several persons who were displaced by the Explosive Volcanic Eruption have indicated an interest in returning to their homes in the Orange Zone.
Last Thursday, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves announced a change in the alert level for the La Soufriere Volcano to orange, following a decision made by Cabinet.
Director of the National Emergency Management Organization, Michelle Forbes says NEMO will facilitate the necessary transport for persons who will be returning to their homes in the Orange zone.
Some 22-thousand people were displaced following the explosive eruption of La Soufriere Volcano on Friday April 9
th.
There are more than four thousand people in 84 shelters on mainland St. Vincent, while there are several persons who evacuated to union Island, Bequia and Canouan.

Washington, D.C., May 10, 2021 The Republic of Malta has donated €25,000 (approximately US$ 30,000) to support the emergency response of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines following the most recent eruption of the La Soufrière volcano.

Major coronavirus metrics continue to head lower in the US, and now also globally. New cases in the US during the week ending May 8th were down 18.6% from new cases during the week ending May 1st, and are now down 83.3% from the January peak; this week also saw fewer new cases than any week since September. This week s US deaths attributed to Covid were 6.8% lower than the prior week s, and down 80.5% from the January high; US Covid deaths are now at the lowest rate since since the second week of July.

Two pick-up trucks have been gifted to the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) and the SVG Police Force to bolster ongoing volcano relief efforts in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The brand new vehicles were donated by local company, Coreas Hazells Inc at a short ceremony on Saturday, May 8, where CEO, Joel Providence handed over the keys to Michelle Forbes, director of NEMO and Commissioner of Police, Colin John.
“We have been making donations since I can say, two or three days after the eruption on the 9 April to both the government and the people,” Providence said as he stood in front of the Coreas Hazells headquarters on Saturday morning with other officials.

Yesterday, Monday May 8, 2021 was observed as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the day was dedicated to the volunteers and staff of the Red Cross who are reaching people affected by the eruption of La Soufrière, dengue, and COVID-19, and display a commitment to local community action that is unstoppable, a release stated.
“It has been a difficult time for our communities since the eruption of La Soufrière one month ago. The Red Cross teams have been out learning about needs and providing emergency relief to those impacted. Many of our volunteers and staff have been impacted by the evacuations themselves,” said Bernard Morgan, President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society (SVGRC).
