Lameness – biggest issue for sheep and cattle farmers

lameness to include footrot and CODD have been found to be the main diseases in sheep Lameness-related problems and endemic infectious diseases continue to be key issues eroding the efficiency of production on cattle and sheep farms according to a new report. Results from Ruminant Health and Welfare's nationwide grassroots survey, reveal that such issues are also compromising the wellbeing of both the cattle and sheep industries, indicating where a step-change in progress is needed to tackle these conditions. In the sheep sector, parasitic diseases and lameness are the most common conditions affecting flock health and welfare according to RH and W chairman, Nigel Miller.

Consultation on changes to payment scheme opens

FARMING groups have welcomed the Government's consultation on changes to the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) to support farmers through the agricultural transition period from now until 2027. The consultation will be open for 12 weeks and seeks to gain responses from the agricultural sector on two key areas: n Lump sum exit scheme: The government proposes to offer farmers, who would like to retire or leave the industry, a lump sum payment to help them do this in a planned and managed way. n Delinked payments: The Government plans to phase Direct Payments out over a gradual seven-year transition period. The consultation includes plans to separate the payment from the amount of land farmed from 2024, as well as encouraging farmers to take up the Government’s new environmental land management schemes, which will reward sustainable food production and environmental improvements.

Survey identifies most problematic sheep and cattle diseases

Survey identifies most problematic sheep and cattle diseases >More in © Tim Scrivener Lameness and endemic infectious disease remain the most troubling problems affecting cattle and sheep production and wellbeing, a nationwide survey by independent body Ruminant Health and Welfare (RH&W) has found. The aim of the survey, carried out last November and December with the help of AHDB, was to establish the disease, health and welfare priorities of those working with cattle and sheep. Foot-rot and contagious ovine digital dermatitis (CODD) were the highest-scoring sheep diseases, while digital dermatitis, bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) and Johne’s disease were rated as having the biggest impact on cattle.

Preparation is key to a successful shearing season

OVERSEAS SHEARERS will be in short supply this year - so make best use of local help Sheep farmers have been reminded to plan well ahead to ensure the shearing of their flocks is completed efficiently this year. As in 2020, Covid-19 is still restricting some movements, including that of many shearers travelling from New Zealand and Australia who would usually make the annual trip to the UK to complete the shearing season. The National Sheep Association, British Wool and the National Association of Agricultural Contractors joined together this week to remind the nation’s farmers to book in shearers – and consider where wool will be sent for processing – in good time.
