SCHERERVILLE â Dozens gathered Friday on the lawn across from the Schererville Police Department for a prayer service in honor of fallen law enforcement officers.Â
Around noon, residents, town officials and Schererville police joined in prayer near the town s 9/11 Memorial to honor law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.Â
The prayer was led by the Rev. Lev Holowaty of Descent of the Holy Spirit Orthodox Church.Â
The service was a part of the department s annual Police Memorial, which is held in conjunction with National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, and National Police Week, which occurs the week in which May 15 falls, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.Â

The men died while serving Athens and Limestone County.
They served with Athens Police, the Limestone County Sheriff s Office and Alabama State Troopers.
The courthouse is bathed in blue light to honor the officers, but the big reveal Thursday night was actually a stone memorial. It s etched with all of the fallen officers names.
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks says he hopes this is someplace people will come to remember their sacrifices.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A poignant ceremony outside the Santa Barbara Police Department headquarters Friday morning paid tribute to the six Santa Barbara officers who have died in the line of duty over the years. It also recognized the serious risks that officers and law enforcement take every day on the job. Every police officer says to the law-abiding community, Stand behind us. We will protect you. We will hold the line, interim police chief Barney Melekian said during the ceremony. Today we are here to remember those people that held the line at the ultimate cost.
