The San Marcos Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently awarded local students with National Defense medals, offering scholarships to the Gold Medal winners. These medals are presented to cadets who, in the judgment of their military instructors, have performed their military studies in an outstanding manner. The winners were as follows:
Bethel Fife and Drum Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution honored three area high school students with the DAR Good Citizen Award: Charlize George, Cannon-McMillan; Samantha Seewald, Upper St. Clair High School; and Riley Sweet, Mt. Lebanon.
The award is for individuals who display qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. Teachers and the schoolâs senior class select the students.
Students who are chosen as a high schoolâs DAR Good Citizen are invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program by submitting an essay. The essay winner is selected by independent judges. This yearâs focus question was, âHow do the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?â
