Contributing Writer During “normal” years, the sounds of volleyballs whizzing over the net and soccer balls sailing across the field are the definitive signal that fall has arrived. With that, you can be sure that fall classes are about to start. Likewise, the sound of basketballs in the gymnasium signaled the transition into winter and the crack of the bat announced spring was finally here. These signals are tried and true indications of the season. But the last year has upended many of our life seasons – including the athletic seasons of community college athletes throughout the country. Both Marshalltown Community College and Ellsworth Community College joined our partner colleges in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in moving all of our seasons to the spring semester, with the hopes that an additional few months would allow time to determine safety protocols for our athletes. (WAFF) - Calhoun Community College adds men’s and women’s cross-country running teams. Both teams will be added to the athletic program fall 2021. The college is preparing to hire a part-time coach for both teams. “It is an exciting time for Calhoun Athletics,” said Interim President Dr. Joe Burke. “This new addition will not only increase our extra-curricular offerings to our students, but it also provides us with the opportunity to expand student athlete enrollment.”

CVCC Sees Three Programs Rise in Rankings CVCC Sees Three Programs Rise in Rankings January 25, 2021 Three Catawba Valley Community College athletic teams moved up in this week’s rankings by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The polls, which were released on Monday, showcased both the Red Hawk volleyball and women’s basketball teams in the No. 5 spot in their respective Division II polls. Last week, the CVCC volleyball program debuted at No. 7 in the NJCAA DII volleyball poll, while the Catawba Valley women’s basketball program entered at No. 8 in the NCJAA DII women’s basketball rankings. A week after receiving votes for a second-straight preseason, the CVCC men’s basketball program entered the top 20 rankings for the first time in program history.
