On Friday, May 7, the Washington Township School District joined the School Nutrition Association in celebrating the eighth annual National School Lunch Hero Day. The staff was recognized for its “dedication, hard work, tenacity and ability to adapt to change on a daily basis.” “In March of 2020, our normal operation just stopped,” Washington Township food service manager Jennifer Mullin said. “Everything that we were used to doing changed, and we only had one day to adjust to the ‘new normal.’ We stopped serving meals for one day only. On March 17, we were serving meals remotely with lots of help from the operations and transportation staff out of the high school 9/10 parking lot.

In partnership with food service Chartwells K12, cooks, chefs, dietitians and food service workers at Muncie Community Schools have served more than 1.1 million meals since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 7, MCS will celebrate and honor those essential workers as part of National School Lunch Hero Day. “Since the day schools shut down, our goal has been to help ensure families never had to worry about where their child’s next meal was going to come from,” Chartwells K12 District Food Director Stephanie Fegan said in a release. “So many families in Muncie depend on school lunch and our team has gone above and beyond to provide nutritious meals and brighten kids’ days. WFISD Chartwells K12 celebrates National Lunch Hero Day

Crystal Brock is one of about 115 frontline workers at Wichita Falls ISD who have kept kids going with over 2 million meals during the pandemic.   WFISD and Chartwells K12 are observing National School Lunch Hero Day on Friday to honor Brock and the other essential cooks, chefs, dietitians and food service workers in the district.  They do more than fill students bellies to fuel their studies a crucial role in itself. These lunch heroes also feed kids souls.  It’s nice to see them smile and feel like they’re wanted when they come through our door to get a plate, Brock, child nutrition manager at McNiel Middle School, said Friday.

All 132 public school divisions ensured students had food to eat when students shifted to online learning.
