Quincentennial marker unveiled in Homonhon Island enablePagination: false Photo courtesy: National Quincentennial Committee/Facebook Tacloban City (CNN Philippines, March 18) – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has installed a new marker at the site of Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan s landing in Homonhon Island at Guiuan, Eastern Samar. The Homonhon marker, located in Sitio Caltilado at Barangay Pagbabangan, is the second marker in Guiuan unveiled by the NHCP to mark the quincentennial anniversary celebration of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. The marker is installed in the site where Magellan and his crew stayed for eight days. A replica of their galleon ship was installed in the area in 2010.

First marker of historic 1521 expedition unveiled in Suluan Island

(Juvelyn Nierves via National Quincentennial Committee FACEBOOK) The Suluan Quincentennial Marker in Suluan Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar was unveiled to mark the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world on March 16, 1521. The event also coincides with the arrival of the Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastian Elcano in Philippine waters. The vessel is named after the captain of the Armada de Maluco–also known as the Magellan-Elcano expedition–which completed the first circumnavigation of the world. Personnel from the Philippine Navy, through BRP Apolinario Mabini, were scheduled to accompany Elcano to the Manicani waters in Guiuan for a fluvial parade also on Tuesday afternoon.
