Tactile Books Developed for Blind Children

Tactile Books Developed for Blind Children by Anjanee Sharma on  February 4, 2021 at 4:10 PM Blind children do not understand the world in the same way as their sighted peers. They often face difficulty identifying objects from traditional tactile illustrations made with raised lines, thermoforming, or embossing. Education and access to culture is the right of every child, whether disabled or not. Educational materials and children s books need to be adapted to a child s particular way of perceiving and understanding the world. Researchers from Switzerland and France have worked together and developed 3D illustrations that children can explore using just two fingers, making it easier to identify an object.

(© UNIGE) (CN) Long before a child can read, they can recognize and respond to the image of a school bus or rabbit in an illustrated book. That is, as long as they can see it. But for blind children, this experience is limited to the text of the story, with no visual cues to help them comprehend what they’re learning. Even tactile illustrations images with a “sense of touch” replicate visual experiences of the sighted, leading blind children to struggle with comprehending representations of traditional objects depicted by raised lines, thermoforming or embossing.
