Clive Community Services office building damaged in Thursday fire

A Thursday morning building fire caused significant damage to several businesses, including the nonprofit Clive Community Services. According to a news release from the city, the fire began around 10 a.m. in the lower level of the building on 2190 82nd St. Officials from the Clive Fire Department believe the fire was caused when maintenance work created a spark that ignited nearby flammable objects. The unit where the fire started which was being used as a maintenance storage area by its occupants, according to Clive Fire Marshal Clay Garcia  sustained the most damage. Other units, such as Clive Community Services, sustained mainly smoke and water damage.

DMARC, Proteus awarded Leadership Grants from Community Foundation Friday, May 7, 2021 9:48 AM The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines has awarded $100,000 to the Des Moines Area Religious Council and $50,000 to Proteus Inc. through Leadership Grants made possible by the Better Together Fund. According to a news release, Leadership Grants are centered on equity and serving populations disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The grant to DMARC will help support the relocation of its warehouses and headquarters to help it meet the growing need for food assistance in the community. The grant will allow DMARC to store and distribute increasing quantities of food and various personal products in the fight against poverty. The grant to Proteus will help the company in providing medical and behavioral health to agricultural families and workers by bringing mobile health care clinics to meat processing plants and offering follow-up care

Central Iowa food pantry network celebrates 45th anniversary

To mark the 45th year of its food pantry network, the Des Moines Area Religious Council is enlisting local grocery store shoppers in a weeklong food drive. Shoppers at participating locations can donate to DMARC s  Drive for 45 starting on Monday and running through Sunday, May 16. People can drop any non-perishable foods into the nonprofit s red barrels, but the three most-needed items are whole-grain cereal, peanut butter and fruit canned in its own juice, said Luke Elzinga, DMARC s communications and advocacy manager. The barrels are placed at local Hy-Vee, Fareway and Price Chopper stores, as well as at the Gateway Market, Brick Street Market and Cash Saver. A few of the stores are looking for volunteers to host pop-up events throughout the next week, including:
