One of the more interesting stories of the
horrified shudder first third or so of the COVID-19 pandemic was the months-long feud between AMC and NBCUniversal that started when Universal announced that
Trolls World Tour had done so well on on-demand platforms after losing its theatrical run that future Universal movies would also potentially be skipping the theaters even after the pandemic had ended. AMC was so mad about this that it declared that no Universal movie would ever play in an AMC theater again, which Universal could not have cared less about, but a few months later they came to an agreement involving shortened theatrical windows that apparently made everyone happy. Then, Disney started dropping movies right on Disney Plus and Warner Bros. announced that its entire 2021 slate would be released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously. Following her touchy-feely appearance on last night’s Golden Globes, Maya Rudolph is returning to
SNL, this time as host. The former longtime
SNL cast member will be the first host when the show returns on March 27 after a brief hiatus:

The series is coming off a five-week run that concluded over the weekend in a fairly underwhelming episode with Nick Jonas pulling double duty as host and musical guest.
This marks Rudolph’s second time hosting
SNL since leaving the cast in 2007, but she’s made plenty of memorable appearances since including several guest spots as Vice President Kamala Harris opposite Jim Carrey’s Joe Biden. Carrey made the decision to step away from playing now-President Biden following the 2020 election, and

Now, are we suggesting that Slippin’ Jimmy engineered the entire COVID-19 pandemic as a way to buy Cinnabon Gene a little more time before whatever all those black-and-white flash-forwards are building toward…finally builds toward it? The last season of
Better Call Saul wrapped up back in April of 2020, which means we’re coming up on a full year since we last (actively) worried about what the show might do to Rhea Seehorn’s Kim Wexler to ensure that she’s not around when
Breaking Bad catches up with her not-so-happy hubby. (And also all that stuff with Lalo and Nacho, but really, it’s mostly Kim anxiety at this point.) Although no dates have been set, the show’s final, 10-episode season will, per Sapan, likely arrive in the first quarter of 2022.
The past few episodes of
This Is Us have been defined by cars. First there was Kate’s journey to confront Marc. Then Randall and Beth’s road trip to New Orleans to learn about his birth mom. And finally Kevin’s rush to make it back to L.A. in time for the birth of his twins. “The Ride” continues that theme with an episode all about the first drive home from the hospital after the arrival of a new baby. It’s the simplest episode of the season so far a low-key, character-centric outing that lets the
This Is Us cast shine in some close-quarters acting. Plotwise, there’s not much to it, and it’s surprisingly muted emotionally too. But “The Ride” is at least an effective reminder of how charming these actors can be and how lived-in the show’s characters feel five seasons in.
